Bastards of Funk

Sweden based Bastards of Funk, started his musical career in the early 90's, with interest in music rooted in both the classical and electronic realm. The interest accelerated when he discovered the sound of artists like Laurent Garnier, Dave Angel and Carl Cox. Their syncopated, rhythmic music inspired him to pursue the art of producing, but also trying to get the music out to a broader public.

Bastards of Funk is a collective of three things: one crazy swede mixed together with a midi controller and a computer. Together they form a sort of symbiosis. If supplied with ideas, the hardware will assist you in making them real! His undeniable interest in music, technology and science has resulted in a passion for electronic music, which embodies all three fields into one artful form. Music that feeds the soul.

By no means a rookie in the business, he has produced music under different monikers for over 14 years, everything ranging from drum n bass to ambient to techno, but always comes back to what he loves the most: house in all its shapes and forms. His perhaps greatest success was Relentless released on the Swedish label Frosty Music, a track which still resides in the top five all time bestsellers on djdownload prog/tribal chart. Between 1997-2000 he hosted a weekly radio show, called Deepsessions which was the perfect channel to spread electronic music in all shapes and forms, as well as getting ideas for productions of his own. This inevitably led to start Djing at local clubs and also playing music live.

What started out as a pure hobby is something more today,

"It's part of who I am. Music is something so fundamental in our lives, yet the complexity of sound generation is incredible. What essentially is nothing more than simple mathematical "building blocks" at the beginning, builds up to something that can be felt and enjoyed by so many. That idea still makes me interested in doing what I do."

With many releases on highly respected labels, it has led to appearances on both the Swedish radio and television with videos aired on MTV, as well as playing live at the biggest festivals in Sweden. His tracks have received huge support from DJs such as Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Anthony Papa and Satoshie Tomiie just to name a few.

Sonic Union

Sweden's Erik Pettersson is better known as DJ/producer Sonic Union, one half of prolific progressive house pair Bastards of Funk and Sonic Union and co-founder, label owner and manager of Lowbit Records.

Having played and produced progressive, techno and tech-house for over 14 years, his versatility, experience and sheer talent enables him to turn his hand from everything to producing, remixing, mastering, DJing and label management. He is known for his technical prowess both behind the decks and the mixing desk, while his DJ sets – which have seen him tour Mexico, India and Greece and hold residencies in Canada and his native Sweden – are renowned for their uniquely uplifting energy.

In 2005 he joined forces with his production partner Daniel Sandberg aka Bastards of Funk and a musical match made in prog-tech heaven was born! Since then this dynamic duo has had their music consistently championed by the likes of Laurent Garnier, Tiesto, Carl Cox, Armin van Buuren, Hernan Cattaneo and Anthony Pappa, featured on compilations including Global Underground and Ministry of Sound and released on labels such as Replug, Whartone, Spherax and Baroque. Also hugely in demand for their remixing skills, to date they have remixed top talent including Jim Rivers, Andy Caldwell, Cid Inc, Shiloh and Quivver and the requests just keep on coming! Having just released their rework of Soundprank 'Fortis' on Proton Music in May 2011, their remix of Jim Rivers 'Black Keys' is due out in July on McGroove and their interpretation of Interplay's 'Ignition' is forthcoming on one of the biggest progressive labels in the world, Anjunadeep.

Not content with their own production achievements, in 2009 the duo formed their record label Lowbit Records with the aim of championing the hottest up and coming producers on the progressive scene and releasing consistently top-notch tracks - and in just two years their eagle-eyed ability to spot and sign the most spine-tingling tracks and talent has seen the label grow from strength to strength. Given Lowbit's soaring success to date, it's no surprise that the label’s impressive artist roster reads like a who’s who of some of the most high-profile progressive artists as well as some of the most talked-about new talent, including Cid Inc, Ben Coda, Soundprank, Thomas Penton, Kassey Voorn and Deepfunk. This star quality hasn’t gone unnoticed, and Lowbit tracks are now regularly finding their way into the record bags and podcasts of DJs including Carl Cox, John Digweed, Paul van Dyk, Jaytech, James Grant, PROFF, Noel Sanger, Beltek and many more.

With such success under his belt it's fair to say that 2011 has gotten off to a flying start for Erik, but not just on the production side; so far the year has seen him play at Lowbit parties in London, Greece and Miami, tour in India and warm up for Spektre and Leeroy Thornhill of The Prodigy. He also hosts a monthly 2-hour Lowbit radio show on Proton Radio and his own monthly Sonic Union podcast, which has over 10,000 subscribers.

With a packed DJing and production schedule, a burgeoning label and worldwide Lowbit parties to run, it's no wonder that Erik has earned a well-deserved reputation as one of the hardest-working DJ/producers out there. But as the saying goes, there's no rest for the wicked – this Swede has a lot more up his sleeve for 2011, so stay tuned...

Materia

Materia, real name Jan Warnstam, started his music career on an Amiga 500 in Sweden in 1988. Since then he has produced many styles of electronic music and seen the birth of genres such breakbeat, jungle and drum'n'bass in the early 90s. He started acquiring more dedicated hardware and soon decided to take his music production to a new level, and to a wider audience. The first stage was to approach national radio channel SR P3 and he quickly got recognized in shows such as P3 Dans, P3 Demo, Morgonpasset and Syntax Error.

In 2001, record store owner Thomas Bergsten approached wanting to start a new drum'n'bass label. Pressure Cut Recordings was formed and on it Jan released one vinyl 12 inch under the name of Hidden Lab before the label hit problems as the UK distributor went bankrupt. At the same time a breakbeat remix was signed to a compilation album on Invisible Records in Chicago under the name Soil of Sound.

In autumn 2001 Jan joined the radio show Vinyl on the local radio station Radio Stil 95,5 MHz. Playing the weekly shows gave a great opportunity to start honing his mixing skills and soon thereafter he got decks of his own. His first recorded mix set was released to the public in May 2002.

In July 2002 Jan had his first club gig at Pace in South London, getting good reviews from both promotors and the visitors. During the summer back home he was part of starting a new drum'n'bass club night called Conscious, booking international guests and national up and coming artists.

The following year meant more gigs, at Svaj in Stockholm, Impedans in Oslo, the music festival Sun Dance in Estonia, the Leet Recordings night in Helsingborg and at Rangus Tangus in Stockholm playing a deep six hour set. In 2004, Materia played in Århus, Denmark and returned to HQ in Oxford for the BASIC003 release party, a drum'n'bass vinyl release featuring a remix by acclaimed producer Paradox.

In 2003 the Conscious collective started a weekly radio show on Stockholm based radio station clubDECKS representing the full drum'n'bass spectrum. In spring 2005 Materia was booked to play his first tour in Poland - Synthetic City in Gliwice and Absurd in Krakow, followed up by a return to Poland in 2006 with gigs in Szczecin and Zielona Gora.

Returning again to the UK with a gig in Nottingham and in February 2007 to Gothenburg, Materia then moved to Denver, Colorado for three months and played a variety of gigs in Denver and Minneapolis, including a live set at the IMAX Theater at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, getting excellent feedback from guests such as astronaut Russell "Rusty " Schweikart.

Coming back from the US, Jan moved to Stockholm and decided to focus mor eon house music. In the summer of 2009, a remix of Houseclap (previously Spånka) on PR Records marked the first release in the house spectrum, with many releases following since on PR Records and other labels globally. Furthermore Materia was commissioned to do a remix of Boom Jinx for big London-based progressive house label Distinctive, he participated in the national radio P2 Ström "Music of the Future" project and in the country's largest newspaper Dagens Nyheter's "Klassisk Remix" online music project.

Moving countries yet again, Bristol, UK is now his hometown since the summer of 2010. The production aspects are tending more and more towards house and the breed of dubstep emerging in Bristol. Materia has played several gigs at Timbuk2 and Day+Night and now promotes the club night LOST! at Timbuk2. His first Bristol-based release was out in September 2010 on Slime Recordings with another release to follow in the summer of 2011. With releases out on Lowbit, Mystery Train, False Flag and Heartbeats already and more coming on Indigo, Absurd, Passion Recordings and PR Records 2011 looks like a great year.

Project Bin Fackeen is slowly, but firmly gaining recognition abroad his homeland. With original tunes being broadcast by global superstars such as Richard Durand, on the highly acclaimed ISOS radio show, Bin Fackeen surely is a name to watch out for, in the future. His releases are being recognized and played by a growing palette of internationally renowned artists such as Armin Van Burren, Matt Darey, Sander Kleinenberg, Laurent Garnier, Dave Seaman, Jerome Isma Ae,Airwave, Gareth Emery, Beltek, Jaytech, Flash Brothers,Steve Kaetzel, Miss Nine, Cid Inc, Mango, Dezza, Darin Epsilon, Luke Porter and many more…Bin Fackeen has several releases behind him already and many more to come.

Bin Fackeen – real name: Damjan Avsec, was born in Slovenia but raised in Kuwait. He began DJing for a local high school radio and soon developed a curiosity for underground dance music. Over the years he presented his DJ skills in different clubs and open air venues in Slovenia.

Later on in his music career, he began “flirting” with the craft of music production and decided to launch a new project: Bin Fackeen was born. His sound varies, dedicated to progressive house though. You will hear tunes sounding trancy, at other times, tunes will have a more tech house edge - the idea is to get into the concept of the label of the remix/release. Keeping this in mind, it is obvious the goal of project Bin Fackeen is to become an all round progressive producer.

Rachael Starr

Combining skill with modernism and her aptitude for style with ingenuity, Rachael is breaking new ground in the electronic and dance music industries.

Producer, DJ and vocalist, there is little territory this young artist hasn’t embraced. Rachael definitely feels the need to prove herself and work very hard at everything she does. As a result, Rachael now stands among the top ranking electronic artists, touted as a respected producer, exciting DJ and unique vocalist. “I guess one of the most important things to me is to not forget why you are doing what you are doing. Take yourself seriously, and other people will too.” she says. “In the end what it comes down to is the music, what it is as a whole and how it makes me who I am…”

A native Californian, Rachael was brought up in a fairly musical household and informally trained in Piano, Cello and Voice. Her interest in dance music was first sparked circa 1992, when she discovered producers such as Orbital, Underworld and the Prodigy; and she has been hooked ever since. Throughout her life Rachael has had first-hand experience with how much music can influence a person. This knowledge, along with her desire to create music that made people feel the way the music she loved made her feel, ignited a passion for production and the soon to follow performance of DJing.

Rachael’s interest in computers and music clashed in the year 2000, when she sat down at the computer and produced her first song. She spent a good amount of time honing her production and engineering skills while dabbling in and mixing styles ranging from house and techno to downtempo and dream-pop. After creating and releasing a few EP’s & remixes, Rachael made an unexpected move, deciding to add vocals to her music, and soon after released her first self-produced vocal tune ‘Remember’ in 2003.

The summer of 2005 saw the release of Rachael’s true production & vocal debut, ‘Till There Was You’. The song was picked up by major dance labels all over the world including Ultra (US), Positiva (UK) and Ministry of Sound (AUS) and received remixes from duos Gabriel & Dresden and Creamer & K among others. Till There Was You quickly became a revolutionary cross-genre hit, being played by nearly every major DJ from Pete Tong & Tiesto to Armand Van Buuren and Erick Morillo.

Soon after the release of Till There Was You, the follow up single ‘Crash’ was released, including an excellent remix from Italy’s Massimo Santucci. The single rode the waves of the underground for a few months before breaking through at Miami’s Winter Music Conference & the Ibiza Summer of 2006.

The future is wide open for this bright girl, as Rachael has definitely earned the reputation of an artist who is always looking forward and refuses to accept any picky definitions or classifications of dance music. Completely conscious of what she is doing, Rachael continues to make music that is both floor moving, and at the same time, deep. The next few years look very promising, and the dance music community is eagerly anticipating the release of her debut artist album, as well as collaborations with renowned artists such as Max Graham, David Vendetta & John Creamer. Rachael looks forward to what the future holds for dance music and hopes that she can be an essential part in helping it to grow and move forward.

Over the last five years, Joel's name has become associated with quality electronic music. Having established a strong following with his creative productions, he moves clubbers with his funky basslines and melody-driven tracks behind the decks. From rocking international summer festivals and raves, to clubs like Victoria's Hush Nightclub and his current residency, Vancouver's legendary Red Room, Joel maintains a focused contribution to the electronic dance music scene.

Joel's first forays into dance music garnered lots of attention with Progressive Sounds giving his track 'Serenity', on Proton Music, a perfect 10/10 review, dubbing it 'truly astounding'. This piqued the attention of label heads and producers alike, giving way to collaborations, originals and remixes that landed on mix compilations by Shiloh, Marcus Schulz and Pole Folder. Labels such as System Recordings, Baroque Records/Limited, Babylon Records and Joel's own imprint, Dot Dot Records have released original tracks that were supported by the who's who of dance music, with Sasha and Hernan Cattaneo charting and giving high praise.

2009 sees Joel officially keep Vancouver as his home base with frequent shows in the city, a growth of followers and an increase of international shows in the pipeline. On the 3rd Tuesday of each month, his label Dot Dot runs a show on Proton Radio with the sweet sweet sounds of Minimal, House and Tech House.

Vinayak^A

Born in the ancient town of Patli Putra the land of Lord Buddha, Vinayak Karthikayan's ("Aka Vinayak^A Producer/Dj (India)) musical journey began at a young age, learning the Tabla, Guitar and Harmonium. Raised in an entirely Indian classical atmosphere gave him a rooted knowledge of rhythm and melody. As years passed, and technology paved the way for electronic music, Vinayak^A decided to study Djing in Bangalore.

He then moved to Mumbai to pursue his dream and became an assistant DJ at a Pub where he worked for one and half years. He later got a job at The LeeLa Palace in Bangalore for 6 months. While he worked long hours, he felt the need for more knowledge in sound, and decided to move to Chennai to pursue his audio engineering at (SAE) After he completed the course he was pretty unsure of which direction he wanted to go. He felt that DJing wouldn't do well for him as there were already a large number of Djs playing popular music. A few years passed by, and Vinayak^A keenly observed and absorbed as much of his environment as he could. And he learnt one important thing.

He says it was all about earning respect and being the best in what you do. With this as his motto, Vinayak^A was determined to harness all his skill and study. And make it. He bought some equipment and locked himself in his studio for 6 Years. His aim was to experiment with various waves in music and sounds from day and night life atmospheres. He recorded all his sounds and designed them to fit in as a story. He tried to record as many abstract elements as possible to create his grooves and fillers. His love for Progressive House music became more interesting and complex he was and still is at ease experimenting on a daily basis. He eventually completed a track but somehow it didn't sound real enough for his liking.

He felt the need for a tighter production and a stronger emotional connection which was lacking. So he then started to create a new vibe with abstract melodies, heavy strings, deep bass lines and funky tight grooves with a pinch of experimental atmospheric sounds. In November 2008 he produced a track called "What's Stopping You" which was signed onto "BAROQUE RECORDS UK". It was released on January 2009 and was a major release for Vinayak^A as he got massive support from the greats like "Eric Prydz, Daniel Portman, Solarity", etc,. What's Stopping You was in the top 100 for 3 weeks on the Beat Port Progressive House Chart's.

After this release he had finally come into a style of his own and knew exactly what he wanted to produce and look forward to. He released a few more original EPs and did some remixes for artist like Joel Armstrong, Larry powers, Evren Ulusoy , Solarity etc.. His recent mixes have received support from John Digweed, Robert Babicz, Andy Newland, Herman Cattaneo, Rafael Noronha, Oliver Klein, Cid Inc etc. 2009 was a special year as Vinayak^A got the honor and opportunity to do a track for "Kamal Hassan's" Tamil Movie "ONAI POL ORRUVAN" alongside his daughter, Shruti Hassan. It gave him a further sense of confidence and helped him move forward.

Lately Vinayak^A has been working on his new album and several remix projects. And in typical Vinayak^A fashion, he says I have no idea what 2010 and the following years have in store for me. My experiments & journey continues My music should say & "do it all...

James Warren

With a PhD in Russian politics, James's route into dance music is not a well-trodden path but a burning lifelong passion for aural satisfaction has served him well. In recent times, his stock has risen significantly in the progressive house community with a compelling blend of immaculate DJ sets and quality production work. In recognition of this, he was invited to join the artist roster of the genre defining Hybridized.org in 2008.

James originally gained his reputation with his meticulously programmed sets, seeing his audiences and support grow significantly with downloads of his sets in the thousands. Way Out West, Gui Boratto and Hybrid remix sets have seen strong support from the artists themselves and further cementing James’s reputation as rapidly rising DJ and producer. Live work has also recently seen him DJ in both the UK and the US as his international standing rises.

James has also proved himself a rising producer, both as solo artist and collaboratively with funk demon, Mike Bandoni as ‘Coalesced’. Coalesced have already released both remix and original material on a number of labels and more work is in progress including a move into film and television scoring. 2008 saw a remix by Darin Epsilon and Way Out West legend Jody Wisternoff on the Coalesced track Cortina and a raft of tracks have been released on a labels such as Triptik, Electrofly, Silk Digital and Polytechnic.

James’s work with Kira has also seen tracks released on Polytechnic Recordings and a Trafik remix for hugely popular Global Underground’s Afterhours series. 2010 also saw the release of the beautifully melodic 'Taking Control' featuring vocals by Rachel Lamb and receiving support from DJs across the globe. The duo have also been remixed by prog heavyweights Shiloh and Benz & MD.

James is continuing to develop his own solo work which has thus far seen him release on Proton, Baroque, Olaris, Lowbit and Silk Digital, gaining support from the likes of Markus Schulz, Nick Warren, Luis Junior, Ruben de Ronde, Cid Inc, Chloe Harris and Elke Kleijn while also catching the eye of Gui Boratto in his original productions.

With releases on Baroque, Proton Music, Lowbit, Particles, Spring Tube and Polytechnic already in 2011, the success of 'his Visceral' show on Proton Radio, and his ever popular exclusive sets for Hybridized, the future for James in the world of production and DJ'ing looks increasingly bright and busy.
